Family portraits are meant to capture the love, connection, and personality of your family — but if you’re a parent, you probably know the thought of getting your kids to sit still, smile naturally, and enjoy the process can feel a little daunting. The good news? With the right preparation and mindset, your portrait session can be smooth, fun, and full of genuine moments you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
Let your kids know what’s happening in advance. Explain that you’re going to have a fun day together as a family and that someone special (that’s me!) will be there to take photos of your smiles, cuddles, and laughter. When kids know what to expect, it helps ease nerves and gets them excited.
While matching outfits can look sweet, comfort is key. Scratchy fabrics or clothes that are too tight can make kids fidgety and cranky. Opt for soft, breathable clothing that allows them to move freely. Bonus tip: have a backup outfit ready in case of spills or last-minute messes.
Every child has a “sweet spot” — whether it’s mid-morning or just after a nap. Try to schedule your session when they’re at their happiest and most energetic. A well-rested, well-fed child is far more likely to enjoy the experience than one who’s tired or hungry.
Pack a few easy, non-messy snacks and water for breaks. A favourite toy, blanket, or even a small game can also work wonders to keep little ones happy and relaxed during the session.
Perfection isn’t the goal — connection is. Don’t worry if your child isn’t giving a perfect smile every second. Some of the most cherished photos are the ones where kids are simply being themselves, whether that’s giggling, snuggling into you, or even pulling a cheeky face.
The best sessions feel more like playtime than posing. Tickles, piggyback rides, chasing bubbles, or even a little dancing can bring out those real, joyful expressions you’ll love to see in your images.
Children pick up on your energy. If you’re stressed, they’ll feel it too. Take a deep breath, enjoy the moment, and let me work my magic. My job is to capture those fleeting expressions, hugs, and connections that tell your family’s story.
Family portraits aren’t about stiff smiles or “perfect” behaviour. They’re about capturing your family as you are right now — with all the love, laughter, and personality that makes you unique. By preparing your kids just a little, you’ll set the stage for a relaxed session and beautiful photos you’ll treasure for years to come.
